How AI Can Help You Plan a Trip (and Why a Travel Advisor Still Matters)

How AI can inspire travel ideas — and why expert guidance turns them into a trip you’ll actually enjoy

January always brings a wave of travelers ready to plan — and finally book — the trips they’ve been dreaming about. A new year has a way of turning “one day” into this year.

Recently, a client scheduled a consultation with me after creating an itinerary in ChatGPT. She was genuinely excited about what she found… and also completely overwhelmed. And honestly? I understand. I use AI too. It’s useful, it’s everywhere, and in many areas of life it can make things faster and easier.

Travel planning is one of the places where AI can be incredibly helpful — as long as you understand where it shines… and where it can fall short.

Where AI Can Be Helpful in Trip Planning

The itinerary my client brought to me had a lot going for it. It included wonderful destinations, suggested a logical order for traveling between them, and (most importantly) it gave us a strong starting point for a real conversation. It helped her put words to what she wanted: the pacing, the type of places that interested her, and the overall feel she was trying to create.

Used this way, AI can be a great brainstorming tool. It can help you:

  • Narrow down regions and cities based on your interests
  • Build early inspiration and structure
  • Compare different versions of “what a trip could look like”
  • Spark ideas you might not have considered

For many travelers, that first step is the hardest part — and AI can make it easier to begin.

Where AI Often Falls Short

Once we looked closer, the issue became obvious: the itinerary was far too packed.

It had her moving to a new city nearly every day. While that might work for someone backpacking with no schedule beyond a train ticket, it usually doesn’t fit travelers who want to experience a destination — especially couples who want to immerse themselves in culture, history, and local life.

In real life, constant movement turns into:

  • Repeated hotel check-ins and check-outs
  • Lost time in transit (even short distances take longer than expected)
  • A trip that feels rushed instead of restorative
  • Less time for the moments you actually remember

Just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should.

How We Turned an AI Itinerary Into a Trip That Makes Sense

Instead of throwing her AI plan out, we used it as a guide and improved it with real-world planning.

We talked through:

  • Which cities made sense as home bases for a few nights
  • Which destinations would be better as day trips
  • What order created the best flow from start to finish
  • What to save for “next time” so the trip still felt enjoyable

We ended up focusing on three key destinations that would be the most impactful for the time she had — and that gave her space to actually enjoy them.

This is the difference between an itinerary that looks good on paper and a trip that feels good while you’re living it.

The Best Way to Use AI (If You Want a Trip You’ll Love)

I don’t think travelers need to ignore AI — I just think it should be used in the right way.

My favorite approach is this:

  1. Use AI for inspiration and early brainstorming
  2. Bring your ideas (even rough ones) to a travel advisor
  3. Let your advisor turn that draft into something realistic, well-paced, and tailored to how you actually travel

AI pulls information from what it can find online. Sometimes that information is outdated, incomplete, or simply not aligned with your preferences. A travel advisor adds something AI can’t: experience, context, and connections — along with the ability to advocate for you when plans change.

Final Thought

AI can be a great starting point for travel dreaming — and I love that it’s helping more people begin the conversation. Let it help you explore what a trip could look like.

And when you’re ready to make it real — with the right pacing, the right hotels, the right experiences, and support throughout — We’d love to help.

If you have an AI itinerary (or even just a list of ideas), send it our way. Together, we’ll turn it into a trip that’s not just possible… but truly enjoyable.
